LAS CRUCES — C. Earl Greer said his campaign for the Republican Party’s nomination for New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives is focused on grassroots values and support.

Greer, a 51-year-old fifth-generation resident of Sierra County, said an emphasis of putting residents’ issues first in the 2nd district is why he is seeking the party’s nomination in the June primary elections.

“I guess the biggest thing in my decision to run is the rancor that’s happening in Washington,“ said Greer, referring to the split in Congress. “We hear talk on both sides of the aisle all of the time. You’ve got some people who say they are red, you have others who say they are blue. I want to be red, white and blue, I want to work for what’s best for our country. Like many people I’ve talked to, I’m frustrated we haven’t seen a true leader.“

Greer, who is half Hispanic and is fluent in Spanish, said he has an excellent grasp of issues and concerns that affect southern New Mexico, particularly border security, immigration, and the military.

“We need someone who lives here and understands what’s going on here,“ Greer said. “We have to secure the border. We need Border Patrol agents to deal with the problems we’ve seen here. But at the same time, let’s give every county sheriff’s department the resources they need so they can work effectively in conjunction with our state and federal law enforcement to effectively protect our borders.“ He added that while he understands immigration concerns, Greer also has concerns of his own regarding new laws that will require residents to carry passports to re-enter the U.S.

“The problem is, the question is, do we have enough manpower to follow up with passports,“ he said. “Much of what we want to accomplish with immigration can be done if we can enforce the laws we already have.“

Greer also said congressional support must stay strong for White Sands Missile Range and all military personnel who live in southern New Mexico.

“White Sands is a jewel for us and we have to capitalize on it,“ he said.
